Sahyadri Tiger Reserve
Sahyadri tiger reserve is national forest reserve
established in 2008 situated in very dense forests areas of sahyadri mountain
range to protect tiger and other wildlife species across the region. It is
located in Western Ghats section of sahyadri range across Satara, Sangli and
Kolhapur district of Maharashtra State. It is spread over total 1170 Sq.kms. of
which 600 Sq.kms. is consist of core area and the remaining is named as buffer
zone. The reserve has semi and rich evergreen forests and trees. Also, the
whole area is spread over other 2 sacturies which are koyna wildlife sanctuary which
is in Satara district and other is chandoli wildlife sanctuary which is spread
in sangli Kolhapur region.
The total area is spread over Satara (
Mahabaleshwar, Jaoli, patan and satara tehsil), Ratnagiri (Khed, chiplun and
sangameshwar tehsil), Sangli ( Shirala tehsil) and Kolhapur district (Shahuwadi
and panhala tehsil).
The sahyadri tiger reserve is home to very wide
range of the flora and fauna. Carnivorous animals like tiger, leopard, and wild
dog can be seen here often. Also, sambar, gaur, mouse deer, four horned
antelope, giant squirrel and bear are often seen here. Here, in reserve, over
30 different mammals’ types have been recorded yet so far. However, the core
part of the reserve is not allowed to visit by outsiders and tourists. Nearly 8
tigers are estimated to have in here near ghatmatha region of the sanctuary.
Sahyadri tiger reserve have biggest hydroelectric
project named as koyna dam is situated in the region of koynanagar in patan
tehsil of satara district. For tourists, koyna dam is very attractive
destination, however, direct entry on the dam is banned for outsiders due to
security reasons.
The region have very high value for historical
remarks from the times of chatrapati shivaji maharaj. Whole area have many
ghats which connects desh region (Satara and Kolhapur Districts) to the konkan
region (Ratnagiri and sindhudurga district). Many forts are situated in the
area, which can be visited across the year. Raghuveer ghat, Kumbharli ghat,
Anuskura ghat and amba ghat are some of the transport motorways which connects
different areas of the whole region. The destination can be visited any time in
year for mental peace and for the study of the wildlife habitat in sahyadri
mountain region.

Mahabaleshwar: Mahabaleshwar hill station is located
30 km away from the Tapola village and can be reached by ambenali ghat present
around.
Koyna dam: it is the biggest hydroelectric project
over koyna dam situated in koynanagar, Satara district.
Kaas Platue: kaas Pathar is the valley of flowers in
western ghats which is very near to the natural reserve.

City is located 70 km away from the village and medha or bamnoli village can be
visited while on route.
Tapola: a very
scenic and beautiful hill station in the koyna region can be visited. It is
nearly 45 km far from the fort.

Forts like
vasota, gunvantgad, dategad, sajjangad, kolkewadi fort, jangli jaigad,
bhairavgad (satara), mahimatgad, vishalgad, pratapgad and madhu makrand gad are
present in the surroundings can be visited for jungle trek experience and
historical learnings.
