Sindhudurg Fort
Sindhudurg fort
is the Maratha fort of great historical significance located in malvan tehsil
of Sindhudurg district. It is situated on the western coast of the konkan
region in Maharashtra state. The fort is basically built on the island near
malvan in the Arabian Sea. The island was known by the name khurte island
before fort was built on it.It is only about 1.5 km away from the malvan coast.
Many tourist visit the fort to learn about history and the structures of the
great Maratha fort.
The fort has
Temple of shri Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and also hand print of Shivaji
Maharaj is preserved and kept in the temple. There are total of 3 temples present
on the fort land. These are Shri Bhavani Temple, Jari Mari Temple, and Shri
rajeshwar temple of shivaji Maharaj. Also, the fort has many fresh water source
for drinking purposes.
The fort is originally built by the great Indian ruler Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 17th century. It was the need of time to extend the empire in sea waters also to fight with British and Portuguese colonies. It was very necessary to make a strong fort in the ocean waters to make this happen. From the long vision of Shivaji Maharaj this fort’s construction started. This fort was built in supervision of hiroji Indulkar who also supervised construction on the Raigad fort. The structure was marvelous and was built by 200 vaddera caste people and more than 4000 pounds of lead were utilized to make foundation and construction stronger. The total area of the fort is more than Murud Janjira fort and it is about 48 acres land. It took whole 3 years to build the fort. The walls were made very stronger because it has to faces the uneven nature of the sea and enemies.
In the older
times, it was not suggested for Hindus to build there navy and was banned by
scriptures. But Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj needed it to be built to counter the
external powers which were rising along the coast. And he started to build his
own navy and sea forts. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is also known as the father
of Indian Navy because of this reason.
The fort is open
all through the summer and winter season. However, in rainy season the fort is
closed for tourist because of the high tides in the ocean. The region receives
high rainfall during the rainy season. The best time visit the fort is through
march- July. The Sindhudurg district is warm and high on humidity across the
summers.
How to Reach:
Sindhudurg fort is located in malvan in Sindhudurg district. Malvan is
around 400 km away from Pune city, 390 km away from Mumbai city, 270 km away
from Satara and 150 km away from Kolhapur city. It is well connected by road
transport and also local bus transport is available through all nearest cities
very frequently.
From Pune: Pune- Satara- Karad- Narayanwadi- Malkapur (through Amba
Ghat)- Rajapur- Oros- Malvan.
From Mumbai: Mumbai- Roha- Mangoan- Khed- Sangameshwar-Ratnagiri-
Rajapur- Oros- Malvan. Or Mumbai- Pune- Satara- Karad- Narayanwadi- Malkapur
(through Amba Ghat)- Rajapur- Oros- Malvan.
